Ana Pérez-Quiroga, Treaty of the Stones of pseudo-APQ, 2007

(Treaty of the Stones of pseudo-APQ, apocrypha that can be dated from before 2007), in black China ink on digital printing.

It's made of 11 works divided into two parts, one of which composed of 7 works representing landscapes in some way as understood by the western culture, the other 4 works, that represent landscapes similar to the ones are to the liking of oriental culture.

I used special stones, called landscape stones - pietra paesinae – which come from Tuscany, and others that are culture stones - wenshi also called dream stones – that came mounted on a black painted wooden support outline geometrically and silver borders
I photographed the stones, amplified them 5 times their size.
Then I inserted the stones in the silluete of a human being and a dog, painted in black Chine ink.

This project had as the starting point an approach to landscape as a kind of painting. To create a dialogue between western landscape representation and oriental landscape representation, in particular.

Right away I was interested in these stones and the fascinating world they opened up for me. The first stones I saw were limestone that looked like  (these didn't interest me as much) My research about these stones, took me to find out surprising imagine possibilities of these stones looking like a sort of "nature", we all know.

I developed this project taking into account that these landscapes would be inhabited by me, creating a possible narrative, and at the same time, would attribute a scale and would situate the landscape in a sort of romantic context. I also tried the possibility that these landscapes could a journey through different amazing worlds.

This idea will be even stronger in the case of the oriental landscapes. The figures I chose – human and dog – are either sitting or lying on the floor, backs turned, and to which I added a flag. This flag symbolizes a vow, a wish of pilgrimage and at the same time, a physical support for this journey. Like the flags one sees in Tibete.

The flags were made of rosewood, separated by small spaces, several words embroyded in the front and back, just like the pairs:

- Hù-shén, shikumen, / bicycle, tai-chi, yulan magnolia,
- Meticulous in detail / handwriting, painting, poetry,
- yuyan, júng'an / 31º10'N, 121º21´E (which is the location of Shanghai)

Only, you can't see any of this! You can only perceive the silluete also painted in China ink, like the figures.
